Jute is a biodegradable product. It can be machine washed in a delicates bag or dishwasher but must be stretched while drying. Failure to stretch the rope will result in shrinking and that shrinking will be uneven.
To stretch, wrap the rope around table or chair legs tightly. You'll need to tighten it occasionally until fully dried.

Rope balms and conditioners may be applied according to the manufacturers instructions to soften and protect the rope from wear.
Mineral oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, beeswax, and other products can be used alone or in combination as conditioners but there is no guarantee that any conditioning product will not harm the rope.
Some products can go bad over time leading to premature end of life for the rope.

Jute rope should be stored in loose curves. Tight bends in the jute weakens the jute fibers. Just like creasing a piece of paper cannot be undone and breaks the paper fibers at the crease, jute fibers are similarly susceptible to wear.
I recommend not bending your rope for storage more than a 2 inch diameter. Use as few bends as possible.
Keep your jute dry.

Nothing is added to the jute during the rope making process. Jute Batching Oil is not required in the process I use to make rope. Larger manufacturers that make huge spools of rope on an automated machine and then cut rope to the desired length require such oil for their machines.
Each hank of rope is made one at a time and regularly inspected for quality.
It is possible that the jute yarn used to make the rope has come in contact with JBO in its manufacturing.
Rope made with JBO should be washed prior to use.
